The music of Philadelphia-based artist and composer Jen Paul can be described in a multitude of ways, but whether the track in question carriesraw, heated blues guitar or washed out ambient waves of sound, everything carries with it the distinct quality of eternally floating into some ether-elsewhere; yet, everything remains firmly rooted in the soil of a place to call home. Utilising the guitar as her main instrument of choice, Jen frequently divulges in the otherworldy calling of objects which seem to have no earthly constraints, moving from synthesised sine to frequent organic drones in a mere second. Voices seep into the mix, heady and bated, finding no foothold in the cragged complexion of this barren whirlwind of lush noises. Finding its roots from foreign seeds planted in an all-around Americanbackyard, this compilation of tracks (handpicked by the artist herself from a collection of years worth of albums), simply entitled “†”, complies with the minimalist mindset while opening expansive fissures in a complex and unyielding land. The strings used throughout the nearly hour long tape bend and sway underneath and around its reels, ranging from fingerpicked acoustics to completely demolished and wrenched-out electric slides, all bathed in a thick wall of reverb and sunkist crunch. Found sound samples and delayed percussion rhythms sink into pastures held low by a violet sun, casting itself on an oceanic playground fitted with moss and stone.
This Relic is summoned in the form of a cassette. Red tape shells are imprinted with black ink, housed in shrinkwrapped plastic norelco cases with full colour J-cards, featuring front cover photgraphy by Kate Kell and inner artwork & layout by D.S. Ciarán & Amanda Boutourline.
